Birmingham, Alabama
The TRUST Initiative
Birmingham/the TRUST Initiative is a comprehensive partnership to redefine the preparation and retention of teachers for urban settings. Many teachers in urban schools leave teaching early or migrate to suburban districts. Indianapolis/NUA Literacy Initiative and Vanguard Process
The IPS/NUA project is a collaborative effort that began in 1998 as a three year Literacy Initiative. The project components included regional staff development sessions, administrator training, extensive site visits, leadership academies, summer intensive sessions, and collaboration with the district offices led by NUA consultants. In June of 2001, the project was expanded to include the Vanguard Project. Teams of administrators and teachers from Vanguard Schools, in collaboration with NUA consultants, are incorporating research-based best practices to create self-sustaining high performing schools to end the achievement gap between the highest and lowest performing students. Additional capacity and support is provided by Instructional Coaches and NUA Certified Instructors, who are IPS employees trained and certified by NUA.

Minneapolis
WMEP/NUA Literacy Initiative
The West Metropolitan Education Program (WMEP) is a consortium of districts in the Minneapolis area, including Minneapolis Public Schools and a number of neighboring suburban districts. Through an open enrollment policy, and a special program called The Choice Is Yours (TCIY), students from each district have a chance to attend the school of their choice in the other districts. A number of children of color whose educational achievement is not as high as it could be are now choosing to attend schools that they and their parents believe will offer them better educational opportunities. The resulting movement, especially from the city to the suburban districts, has led to increased racial and socio-economic diversity in all the districts, a phenomenon that requires modifying classroom instruction to accommodate to the changing student populations. WMEP and NUA are working together to design and implement a Literacy Initiative that will provide guidance and professional development to the participating schools, the goal being to ensure that every child increases his or her potential and is able to read, write, and think at the highest possible levels.

Newark, New Jersey
Newark/NUA Literacy Initiative
The Newark. NUA literacy initiate began in 2000 with the introduction of Writing as Learning to the district’s 13 high schools. The NUA started with a high school writing initiative because Newark needed a strong writing component in its plan to gain district independence from state management. In 2001 the NUA, with the support of the central administration, began a year’s long process for introducing literacy and writing concepts to the department chairs, assistant principals and principals. In 2002-2003 the initiative built upon the foundation of the previous year’s sessions including piloting the writing program in two of the district elementary schools. In addition to literacy, NUA consultants support the districts ETS system for teacher evaluation and coaching sessions for building administrators.
