"The National Urban Alliance represents the very best in staff development. Student achievement is its focus. Results, rather than mere routine, separate NUA from so many staff development efforts, including those of some very popular programs and organizations."

- Asa G. Hilliard III, Georgia State University

"The National Urban Alliance has emerged as one of the most dynamic and exciting forces in the school reform scenario as it affects the lives of children in our cities and, especially, the lives of children in black and hispanic neighborhoods...A desperately needed catalyst for change and an important source of courage for those in the trenches."

- Jonathan Kozol, Author

"The excellent work of the National Urban Alliance is groundbreaking in its ability to bring research-based strategies to educators that improve students achievement in reading and writing. Their work is comprehensive, systemic, and effective."

- Dorothy S. Strickland, State of New Jersey Professor of Reading

About Us

The NUA's work is focused on learning and teaching. The NUA's network of mentors are highly skilled and exemplary professionals in the field of education; many of whom have doctoral degrees in education.  They come from all areas of the country and provide ongoing professional development activities for teachers to improve classroom instruction. NUA mentors are teachers, administrators and university faculty who promote instructional strategies based upon the latest research on concept and cognitive development, reasoning, thinking, and higher-order comprehension skills.

NUA mentors go into schools and demonstrate lessons in math, science, reading, and writing with groups of students. NUA coaches the administrative and instructional staff in best practice -- for improving both structural and instructional changes required for accelerated learning

With guidance, assistance and coaching from the NUA mentor, teachers learn how to work together to unleash their knowledge, skills and creativity in a supportive environment. Because NUA mentors understand the challenges faced by educators today, their work is as much about lifting morale and giving people hope as it is about providing educators with the latest knowledge, tools and techniques.

Districts NUA works with:

New York City, New York; Seattle, Washington; Indianapolis, Indiana; Beacon, NY; Newark, New Jersey; and Minneapolis, Minnesota. NUA has previously worked with Charles County, Maryland; Dayton, Ohio; Freeport, Illinois; Kansas City, Missouri; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Mt. Vernon, New York; Prince George's County, Maryland; San Francisco, California; South Huntington, New York; Stamford, Connecticut; and Washington D.C.

Mission Statement

The mission of the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education (NUA) is to substantiate in the public schools of urban America an irrefutable belief in the capacity of all children to reach the high levels of learning and thinking demanded by our ever-changing global community.

The work of NUA is focused on learning and teaching. A network of exceptionally qualified mentors around the country provide ongoing professional development activities for teachers, principals and other school personnel to improve classroom instruction. NUA mentors are practicing teachers and university faculty who emphasize instructional strategies based upon the latest research on concept and cognitive development, reasoning, thinking, and higher-order comprehension skills.

Vision

We are passionate in striving toward a world in which barriers to high levels of learning borne of racism, sexism and economic disadvantage are eliminated for all children and youth, especially those of color living in urban areas.
